In the beginning, my father had a dream. Janos Meszaros – bassoonist, conductor, and teacher of generations of musicians – had always been committed to young musicians. He was convinced that talents needed a wide range of support. His dream: to promote young talents outside the usual courses of study. He dreamed of a meeting place. Young musicians should be able to come into contact with great masters. In 1979 in Assisi and later in Riva del Garda his dream began to come true. In 1997 he brought the festival to Ticino: TICINO MUSICA was born.
Janos Meszaros would have turned 90 this year. For this birthday we dedicate to him the Concert of the Masters on July 24 in the Aula Magna of the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana.
The basic concept has remained the same throughout the years, but the festival activities have expanded. Today over 80 events take place throughout the Canton, masterclasses, the Opera Studio, and the Festival Orchestra.
I would like to thank all those who make Ticino Musica possible! Above all, the tireless Ticino Musica team, who prove time and time again that each and every one of them can be blindly relied upon. The Confederation and the Canton Ticino, the numerous municipalities that host concerts and welcome the festival, the authorities, foundations, companies and associations, public and private sponsors, donors as well as the Ticino Musica Foundation and the Circle of Friends of Ticino Musica. They all play an important part in the 2023 Festival. Please, get in touch with us if you think you too can help our festival. Every contribution is vital and welcome.
Finally, I would like to thank all the great masters of this year’s edition, the young musicians, and the winners of international competitions who have accepted my invitation to come to Ticino. They will enrich TICINO MUSICA 2023. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you and wish you great work.
For the 27th time, my wish to the audience is for a lot of fun and great musical experiences here in the Italian-speaking Switzerland with TICINO MUSICA.
Gabor Meszaros,
Artistic director
