Hariolf Schlichtig began his studies with Max Rostal at the Music Academy in Cologne, continuing later with Sàndor Végh, Cecil Aronowitz, Nathan Milstein and Zoltàn Székely, who contributed enormously to his musical development. He was violin, viola and chamber music professor at the Music Academy in Aachen. At present, he teaches viola and chamber music at the Music Academy in Munich, gives masterclasses and has made several recordings for WDR, BR, SDR, ORF, the Norwegian Radio and Radio Bremen. Besides his activity as soloist, he regularly collaborates in chamber music ensembles with wellknown musicians. Founder member of the Cherubini Quartet, he has won prestigious international competitions. He has played in the main concert halls of Europe, Japan, U.S.A., Canada, South America and Africa, in the music centres of Asia and also in several festivals such as Salzburg and Berlin. Particularly noteworthy are his recordings of string quartets by Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Schoek and Matthus for the EMI Elektra.
